Our story

Our history goes back to 1861, when Francesco Sala Ferrés started a business making and exporting wine to America. From those early roots, we continue to 1911, with the marriage of Pedro Ferrer and Dolores Sala Vivé - the heiress to the Sala wine emporium. Dolores’ in-depth knowledge of winemaking combined with Pedro’s vision and entrepreneurship created the core foundations of Freixenet today.

It was these two who made the bold decision to turn from still winemaking to the complexity of producing Traditional Method Cava. And what would they call this brand of Cava? The young couple chose a familiar name close to home... Pedro had grown up in a vineyard called “La Freixeneda,” which in Catalan means “Ash tree grove” and as a result, his nickname was “el Freixenet.” Little did they know then that this nickname would become known as a major brand around the world.
